Item description
UP armchair and pouf by Gaetano Pesce for B&B Italia. There are seven pieces that make up this collection which in the 1960s was one of the most striking cases of international design with these shapes covered in stretch fabric. The UP armchair by B&B Italia is certainly the best known and became an undisputed icon in those years of great industrial ferment. Its anthropomorphic womb-like shapes that recall the votive statues of prehistoric fertility goddesses, the sphere connected to the armchair via a cable that acts as a footrest, a metaphor for the female image of the woman with the ball and chain, "prisoner of herself" as Pesce himself states, it is the essence of the project that took shape in 1969. The provocative representation of the series is superimposed on a concept of industrial, technological innovation and commercial dynamics. The armchair takes up the changing shape of the sponge which, when squeezed, contracts and reduces its volumes. This experimented with a new construction concept allowing to reduce transport and storage costs by expanding the quantities and facilitating impulse purchases for the consumer who could take it home personally. In fact, the armchair was vacuum packaged, obtaining a contraction that reduced its volume to 10% of the total. By opening the packaging, the material in contact with the air resumed its shape silently and without the need for any tools, thanks to the polyurethane technology which at that time saw B&B Italia as a pioneer in its use and experimentation. This construction process was maintained until 1973. In 2000 they were put back into production with a standard production process, by renewing the materials the series acquired new life and comfort. The "vacuum" process is replaced with new and further research on the material, which extends its duration over time. There are various uses and spaces suitable for this collection, in those situations where modernity and art blend and dialogue in a perfect union, as in the UP7, a large foot-sculpture that resembles an archaeological find. The UP armchair proposed here is in the striped fabric version. Pouf: 57 x 57 cm.
