Item description

Sofa by Guglielmo Ulrich, 1950s. Armrests and feet in curved walnut, upholstery in bouclé fabric. Completely restored: padding and upholstery are new, armrests and feet have been renewed and polished. Seat height: 38 cm. Guglielmo Ulrich was born in Milan in 1904 to Alberto and Luisa Battaglia. Coming from a noble family of Danish origin, he attended the Brera Academy and, after two years, in 1928 he graduated in architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan. In 1930 he founded, together with Scaglia and Wild, the Arca (home furniture) company of which he would be the designer and which would present objects made with great care and skill using precious and exotic materials (until 1936). Until 1945 he designed furniture for Scaglia, made by Jannace and Kovacs. In the 1950s he participated in several Triennials, furnished shops and offices in various Italian cities and designed buildings. He took part in several competitions, including those relating to naval furnishings. The 1960s represented progress for Ulrich, with a cautious interest in the industrial world. In 1961 he received first prize in the Trieste Fair competition for a chair produced by Saffa. The shift in scale from object to architecture did not involve particular methodological measures. In both cases Ulrich did not admit distinctions of attitude but the confirmation of a practice always aimed at the maximum possible result. He died in 1977.
