Item description

Zelda sofa and pair of armchairs by Sergio Asti for Poltronova, 1960s-70s. Sergio Asti trained as an architect at the Milan Polytechnic from 1947 to 1953 and opened his studio the same year he graduated. Among the first Italian industrial designers, he became a founding member of the UAM (Union of Modern Artists). He is known as one of the figures who worked on experimenting with shapes and space, helping to create more ergonomic projects. Asti's creations are considered typical of the organic design produced in post-war Milan. He worked alongside the most important production houses of his time, such as Artemide, Arteluce and Martinelli Luce. Asti won the Compasso d'Oro in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1962 and 1970. Many of the works he designed are now part of the collections of prestigious design museums around the world such as the MoMA in New York. Poltronova is a company that has made history. Founded by Sergio Cammilli in 1957 in Tuscany, it was the first to include both mentors such as Gae Aulenti, Giovanni Michelucci, Angelo Mangiarotti in its catalogue. In the first years of the company's history, a fundamental contribution was given by Ettore Sottsass, who became its artistic director in 1958; with Poltronova he created dozens of his projects, from furniture to ceramics. Poltronova has participated in important exhibitions and events in the history of Italian design.
