Item description
Let us preface this by saying that the actual colour of the two chairs is that of the last photo of the chair, since it was taken in homogeneous natural light; the colours of the other photos taken in the studio are as close as possible to reality, but the colour rendering depends very much on the light in which they were taken and on how the texture of the velvet responds to the artificial light (lighter in the vertical surfaces, darker in the horizontal ones). A beautiful and elegant pair of French 'Bridge' model chairs; they are made of robust and valuable oak wood. The entire structure is built to be solid and functional; the legs are compact and sturdy and have a subtle and pleasing cabriole design. The armrests are curved and high to give more space for seating; the backrest is very comfortable and positioned at the right height for comfortable sitting. They were created between 1948 and 1950 by a skilled craftsman from Nancy, a city in the Lorraine region of France; the city was famous for its school of art and design called 'Ecole de Nancy'. This school played a significant role in the development of the furniture styles known as 'Art Nouveau' and 'Art Deco', popular at the beginning of the 20th century. The upholstery was badly damaged, so we had them reupholstered and completely reupholstered by an old craftsman in Florence who used a sturdy velvet of a fine purple colour and yellow trimmings of trimmings. In removing the old upholstery, we found, attached to the wood, a label (see photo) from an old Toulon chair carcass factory, which produced 17 of these chairs in March 1930. Toulon was a historical site for chair production in France and contributed to the development of traditional furniture in Lorrain, based on the skills of carpenters, carvers and cabinet-makers. The chair shells (carcasses des sieges) were made of hardwood (beech or ash) and were supplied unfinished, i.e. with untreated wood. The upholsterer would make the seat, paint or patina the frame of the chair and cover it with the desired upholstery. French 'Bridge' chairs are a traditional type of chair named after the card game of Bridge, very popular in France; these chairs are famous for their elegant and refined design. They are made of solid wood with fine detailing; one of the main features of this type of chair is the high back, a feature that provides ergonomic support for the back and helps one sit comfortably during long games of Bridge or other sedentary activities. The seat of Bridge chairs is also generally padded to provide greater comfort (we reiterate that in our chairs the pad has been re-upholstered). Some versions of these chairs can be fitted with armrests (like ours), which provide additional comfort and support for the arms during use. The legs often have a slight curvature, which lends elegance and stability to the structure. Besides being used for playing Bridge, these chairs are also suitable for dining or as additional seating in different areas of the house. The restored chairs are in excellent condition. Measurements: width 59 cm, depth 48 cm, height 83 cm, seat 45 cm.
