Description: Old oil painting on canvas depicting the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine. The scene takes place in the foreground and one can see the Madonna holding the Child towards St. Catherine of Alexandria, kneeling on the left and recognisable by the crown on her head, the latter painted with quick and confident brushstrokes. The saint is about to be mystically married by the child Jesus, who holds the ring finger of her right hand to put a ring in it, an iconography in use since the Middle Ages, symbolising the perpetual dedication to virginity of the former princess, in which all women who took vows or who in any case were inspired by a Christian type of conjugal continence could be recognised. At the sides watch the scene with anxious anticipation as the two apostles, one of whom is intent on writing the story, probably in response to explicit requests from the commissioner. The brown tones of the Neapolitan tradition are enlivened by splashes of colour, such as the women's robes. Measurements: 157x180cm. Provenance: 18th century Naples.
