Item description
Oil painting on canvas attributed to Pier Francesco Cittadini (Milan, 1616 – Bologna, 1681). The work features the figure of the blessing Young Jesus in the centre, dressed in a long red tunic. His figure is surrounded by a lush garland of flowers with roses of different colours, mainly white, pink and yellow. The work can be traced back to the hand of the Milanese-born master, but long active between Bologna and Rome, Pier Francesco Cittadini. A pupil of Crespi and Guido Reni, he achieved his first great successes during his Roman stay when he dedicated himself to genre painting and also managed to obtain commissions from Louis XIV, especially for landscape paintings and still lifes. It is precisely in this vein that the work presented here can be placed, in a very good state of conservation, and which can also boast an important provenance from a Venetian noble family. Note the extraordinary resemblance to life of the roses, with elegant touches of skill such as the small and delicate drops of dew resting on some petals. Within frame, not coeval.
