Item description

Oil painting on canvas attributed to Marco Marcola (Verona, 1740 – 1793) depicting an interior with a carnival scene. Size without frame: 64 x 93 cm. Size with frame: 76.5 x 105.5 cm. Marco Marcola, also known as Marcuola, was born in Verona in 1740 to his father Giambattista, also a painter. He was a painter of various genres and of vast production, widespread mainly in the Veneto-Lombardy area. His works ranged from frescoes to the decoration of signs, furniture, sedan chairs and gondolas, but above all he was requested for his popular canvases. He began his career decorating villas in the Verona area, his style was considered very similar, both in terms of style and themes, to that of the Venetian Giandomenico Tiepolo, although no document mentions any possible acquaintance between the two Venetian painters. Precisely in the works of Tiepolo, also known for his Pulcinella and party scenes, numerous affinities can be found with the canvas proposed here. The subject is typical of Marcola: a scene full of characters, both male and female, in carnival dress, depicted in a joyful and festive attitude. The tones see the predominance of brown colors. The coloristic notes are entrusted to the characters' clothes, with strange headdresses, wigs, bellies and prominent humps. The work, in a very good state of conservation, can easily be compared to a smaller canvas presented at auction in 2017 in America depicting The King of the Carnival of Verona (oil on canvas, 54 x 71 cm), where they seem to come to life the same characters.
