Roman school oil painting on canvas from the 18th century depicting the Madonna and Child. Size without frame: 74 x 62 cm. Size with frame: 96 x 85.5 cm. Coming from an important private collection in Bologna and never appeared on the market, the beautiful canvas proposed here is characterized by its great quality and very good state of conservation, as well as by the beautiful gilded and carved wooden frame that contributes to embellishing it further. The Virgin, with her left hand resting on her cheek, wears a red and white dress with yellow and blue sleeves, the same blue as the cloak which then fills the scene in the lower part of the composition. He holds the Baby Jesus with his right hand, resting on his chest, represented in the act of blessing while with his left hand he holds a small wooden cross. The background finds light from a window open to the sky in the upper right corner, while the remaining part of the scene is occupied by a red curtain. The bright colors of the painting, with the dominant contrast between the two primary colors blue and red, the position of the Virgin and Child and the great general quality of the work suggest attributing it to an artist active in Rome in the first half of the 18th century, who had in mind the lessons of the masters of his time and those preceding him, first of all Ciro Ferri to whose works, especially in the chromatic approach, this painting can easily be traced back.
