Item description
Flemish oil painting on canvas from the 19th century depicting merchant boats in a storm. Size without frame: 96 x 150 cm. Size with frame: 107 x 162 cm. The large painting is very decorative and scenographic, depicting five boats of different sizes trapped in a violent storm on the edge of a rocky coast. Numerous figures populate the boats and help convey the narrative and dramatic sense of the image. The triangular flags with the succession, from top to bottom, of the colors red/blue/white confirm the attribution to a skilled Flemish painter active in the first half of the 19th century. In good general condition, albeit with some small restorations as evidenced by the photograph on the back.
