In the center of the panel, on a red background, Saint Nicholas is depicted holding the Book with his left hand; at his sides the Virgin and Saints. Ancient Russian icon in a good general state of conservation (some small restorations, in no way affecting the general quality of the work). Born in Patara di Lycia in around 270, Saint Nicholas is the saint who enjoyed the most widespread cult after the Virgin. A man of great charity, he stood out for his generosity towards the poor and needy. Saint Nicholas of Myra is also called Bari, because his body was brought to this city and remains preserved. He died in Myra on 6 December 343 and towards the end of the 11th century 62 sailors took possession of his relics and transported him to Bari with the indescribable exultation of the population. The sailors delivered the body to the Benedictine Elia, abbot of San Benedetto, who built the saint's Basilica on the spot. The holy bishop Nicholas is greatly venerated throughout the Catholic and Orthodox world and especially in Russia where, as in Bari, in addition to the universal feast of 6 December there is also that of 9 May in memory of the translation of the relics. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of children, young people, pharmacists, merchants, sailors, fishermen.
