Item description
The Maralunga sofa, designed by the legendary Vico Magistretti for Cassina in the 1970s, is a true icon of Italian design. This sofa, still upholstered in its original green velvet fabric, bears witness to the timeless appeal of its creator's vision. The Maralunga sofa is not just a piece of furniture, but a reflection of comfort, reassuring aesthetics and adaptability. With a design that transcends fleeting fashion trends, Magistretti's creation embodies the idea of transformability. The sofa features a unique internal mechanism that allows the armrests and headboard to rise and unfold at will, offering customisable comfort that goes beyond mere style. Magistretti further explores the concept of object transformability in projects such as the Veranda (Cassina, 1983) and the subsequent folding objects for Campeggi. However, he never compromises on comfort, ensuring that his creations are as functional as they are beautiful. Innovation in every detail. The Maralunga sofa, in this two-seater version, boasts a steel frame with black plastic bases, which guarantee stability and durability. The padding of polyurethane foam, Dacron fibre and polyester wadding provides luxurious seating. The cushions and seats are also made of polyurethane foam and polyester wadding to ensure long-lasting comfort. What sets the Maralunga sofa apart is the innovative single headrest, which can be adjusted to a high or low position. Initially, the configuration of the headrest could be changed through the hidden insertion of a bicycle chain, a system patented in 1985 (patent series 161717 of 3.2.1985). This innovation reflects Magistretti's commitment to designing for variable functional needs dictated by modern domestic rituals, such as television. The Maralunga sofa is still in production today, with slight dimensional modifications. It remains a symbol of international success and was awarded the prestigious Compasso d'Oro by ADI in 1979. Magistretti's creation reminds us that design is not just formality, but responds to the evolving needs of our homes and lives, confirming the enduring significance of each designer's vision.
