Item description
Rockets aiming at the moon, space stations orbiting the earth and other celestial bodies, chimpanzees dancing around a black monolith... the 1960s and 1970s were imbued with an idealised (and sometimes rather bizarre) vision of the future that, all things considered, didn't turn out to be as far-fetched as one might have hoped. We still don't have flying cars, we don't regularly go to the Moon and we have never gone further than our lower orbit since the last Apollo mission. The richest legacy of that era, the so-called Space Age, can be found in the world of interior design and furniture. The sleek, sinuous shapes of tables, lamps and armchairs of the era convey a sense of total adherence to the aesthetics of space travel and off-world adventures. From the masterpieces of the most famous designers to the most earthy pieces, each Space Age piece seems to come straight from an orbital station. Such is the case with this small table with a rectangular top, made in Italy around the first half of the 1970s, with a geometric appearance underlined by the imposing base made of folded sheet metal. The smoked glass top is also a signature of the period and in this case is preserved in perfect original condition. The legs are also in good condition, showing only a slight and predictable patina of time.
