Oil painting on canvas by Fiorenzo Tomea (1910-1960) depicting thistle flowers, 1958. Signed at lower left. On the back is a label from Galleria Annunciata, Milan, with the title and date of the work. Fiorenzo Tomea made, especially in the 1950s, a vast production of flowers, in vases or alone; this subject was in the same years a traditional theme in the paintings of De Pisis and Mafai, and was intended to propose a reflection on vanitas, that is, on the fleetingness of life. The dried, meager flowers, isolated from each other, suspended in a livid, almost surreal atmosphere, convey a sense of defeat and estrangement. The work is presented in a style frame. Size without frame: 60 x 40 cm.
