N.Y. was founded in 1955 by Charles Stendig. It played a key role in introducing modern European furniture to the American market. It was operational from 1956 to 1976. It played the role of exclusive distributor and retailer in the United States of Bauhaus artifacts by Kurt Thut, Hans Eichenberger and Robert Haussmann. Throughout the 1960s it imported and sold designer furniture by Bruno Rey, Vico Magistretti and Marcel L. Breuer, creator of the Wassily B3 armchair and the B32 Cesca chair. In 1967 it moved its headquarters to a large space on Manhattan's East Side and opened showrooms in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, representing Italian manufacturers Poltronova and Gufram, and bringing revolutionary works of Italian design to American shores. In 1971 Charles Stendig sold the company to Burlington Industries. He retired in 1976. Today Stendig's European imports are coveted by interior designers and vintage furniture collectors, and he will forever be known as the man who introduced modern European design to the United States.
