Giancarlo Piretti was born in Bologna in 1940. He attended the State Institute of Art in Bologna, where he obtained the title of Master of Drawing. In 1960 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. Subsequently he taught Interior Design for seven years at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Bologna. In the same period he worked for twelve years as an interior designer at Anonima Castelli, designing lines of furniture for the home, office and community, for which he registered numerous industrial and mechanical invention patents and ornamental models. Among his best-known projects are Plia, a folding chair, Platone, a folding table, DSC (106- AXIS), a seating system for community and institutional spaces, Sistema 61, a modular sofa system. Anonima Castelli was founded in 1877 by Ettore Castelli as a cabinetmaker. after a gradual transformation, between the 60s and 80s the company gave shape to one of the most vital and innovative projects in the world, collaborating with illustrious names in Italian and international design: Emilio Ambasz, Rodolfo Bonetto, Nilo Gioacchini, Giancarlo Piretti , Charles Pollock, F.A. Porsche, Richard Sapper, Claudio Bellini, Michele De Lucchi, Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, Gino Gamberini, Enzo Mari and Mario Ruiz. Its products will soon become iconic and will be chosen to furnish the most important presidential offices of banks and large industries.
