Item description

Refined and rare Italian Biedermeier coffee table. The particular shaping of the top is repeated both on the massive column that supports it and on the solid base, creating a uniform whole but with a strong and personal aesthetic. The coffee table was made between 1890 and 1895 in Cantù, in the province of Como, Italy, one of the most important cities for artisanal furniture production in Lombardy. It is home to numerous luxury and designer furniture companies, which create unique, bespoke pieces using fine materials and high-level craftsmanship techniques. Cantù companies supply furniture for a select and demanding clientele, including private individuals and luxury furnishing projects for hotels, restaurants and prestigious residences all over the world. The craftsmen were inspired by the desire to create a small object with strong and simple lines and gave the table a timeless elegance. Its design plays between austerity and rigor, and its exaggerated linearity gives the object a dynamic and majestic character. The entire structure is made of walnut with a beautiful and decorative veneer of fine walnut root. The craftsmen treated the walnut briar with ancient sanding, varnishing and polishing techniques, thus enhancing the colours, flame and grain of this beautiful wood. The upper floor, with these techniques, took on a fantastic and fascinating appearance. Walnut briar is obtained from the root of the tree itself and is a set of intertwined and twisted wood fibers that give the wood its characteristic hardness and firmness. Briar also has an aesthetic value, as it is very elegant and refined thanks to its numerous constantly evolving natural veins. Each briar article is an absolutely unique product. The most common burl veneer is walnut, characteristic of luxury furniture. Veneer is an ancient woodworking technique that involves applying a thinner layer of fine wood onto a substrate of normal quality walnut wood. The precious walnut wood is harvested from trees grown specifically for this purpose, which is then cut into thin sheets whose thickness varies from 1 to 2 millimeters. The base wood is prepared by applying a special glue and then the high-quality walnut slabs are applied manually and evenly. After this process, everything is pressed and left to dry, allowing the glue to adhere firmly between the fine walnut wood and the support, creating a stable veneer; once dry, this is finished with sanding, polishing and the application of protective finishes, such as varnishes or oils, to improve the appearance and durability of the wood. The history of veneer dates back many centuries: it is believed that it was first used in ancient Egypt and China. Over the centuries this technique has spread throughout the world and has continued to evolve, becoming an important part of the production of high-quality furniture, luxury items and art objects. This ancient technique, applied to our coffee table, has allowed us to enhance the colours, flaming and grain of the precious flamed walnut. The craftsmen who worked on this object managed to create an extraordinary, refined and fascinating piece of furniture, capable of communicating suggestions of times gone by, tradition and functionality. The coffee table has been completely restored using ancient manual techniques by our team of craftsmen who have enhanced and enriched the already high qualities of the wood.
