Item description

Etching and drypoint "Vultures" by Romeo Costetti (Reggio Emilia, 1871 – Rome, 1957). Plate: 29 x 24 cm. Sheet: 42 x 35 cm. Castetti was a painter and engraver specialized in the monotype technique. There is little information about the author, who was overshadowed by the greater fortune of his brother Giovanni Costetti. After an initial training at the Art Institute of Bologna, his training continued in Reggio Emilia adhering to the poetics of realism. Between 1891 and 1893 he was in Florence, Rome and Naples; in Paris in 1900 with Ardengo Soffici, his brother Giovanni and Umberto Brunelleschi. He settled permanently in Florence, dedicating himself to portraiture, to life subjects with intense and melancholic results. In painting he investigates the animal world with precision and naturalness. He became interested in carnival masks from the 1910s until he exhibited the "Venetian Masks" series in Milan in the 1930s. From 1904 he exhibited in Florence, at the Venice Biennials from 1905 to 1936. In 1930 he exhibited with excellent comments from critics at the Paris Etchings Exhibition. Intense depiction, perhaps from life, of three vultures perched on a dry branch. The long stroke obtained from a prolonged bite, crossed only in the shaded areas, and mixed with the use of dots and light drypoint scratches, realistically describes the plumage of the birds, making it almost tangible. He signs in pencil under the engraving and writing "Prova". The circulation is not known. A similar etching depicting two owls is preserved in the Davoli collection in Reggio Emilia. Excellent impression in brown with ground glazing on light paper. In excellent condition, traces of manipulation and a repaired tear on the left white margin. Wide margins. Bibliography: A.M.
