Item description
Red pencil drawing by Pio Semeghini (Quistello, 1878 – Verona, 1964) depicting a glimpse of Burano, 1920. Semeghini was an Italian painter who, through the study of both the ancient masters and his contemporaries, created a language that anticipated informal art. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Modena and Florence. In 1899 he moved to Paris, between odd jobs, frequented museums to get closer to Impressionist art and met his colleagues Modigliani, Soffici, Serverini, De Pisis and Gino Rossi. In 1912, having returned to Italy, he settled in Burano, where with Gino Rossi, Umberto Moggioli and Arturo Martini he founded the group known as the Burano School. He exhibited at the Venice Biennials and the Roman Quadrennials, receiving favor from critics and the public. From the end of the 1930s his painting became more rarefied and his landscapes and still lifes were surrounded by a lyrical, almost dreamlike atmosphere. In this animated glimpse of Burano, some characters are depicted near a house and seem to be observing the lagoon. In the background the profile of another island. In the foreground the stretch is marked by contour lines that define the terrain, the buildings and the men; the background is only hinted at, as if enveloped by the lagoon atmosphere. The very choice of red pencil and brown paper would suggest a sunset. At the bottom right he signs "Semeghini and date 192(?)". A drawing with the same subject dated 1920 is published in the catalog of the 1996 Verona exhibition. In excellent condition. The sheet is mounted in a walnut frame and gilded palmette border dating back to the early 19th century. Bibliography: F.
