Stilnovo was part of the first wave of post-war Italian design companies specialising in the production of innovative and functional lighting. At its peak, between 1950 and the late 1980s, Stilnovo collaborated with some of Italy's leading designers, such as Bruno Gatta, Danilo & Corrado Aroldi, Gaetano Sciolari, Alberto Fraser, Joe Colombo and Ettore Sottsass. At a time when the idea of function was combined with new types of materials to produce spartan and new forms, it was an era of experimentation, when the neo-realism movement clashed with the philosophy of organicism, and when architects borrowed, subverted and discarded the craftsmanship that had been the dominant creative force in Italy for centuries. Often compared with Arteluce, which under the leadership of Gino Sarfatti explored abstract and linear forms, Stilnovo is known for its well-executed organic lines. The Periscope table lamp, designed by Aroldi in 1967, is an example of this. Exhibited at the New Domestic Landscape in New York in 1968, its snake-like lines are softened by the enamel finish, creating an effect that is both restrained and vivid.
