A particular and interesting pair of Italian bedside tables in walnut; on each bedside table, an elegant black glass is housed on the upper shelf; the space underneath is efficient and functional; the large lower compartment is closed by two doors, and inside it is divided by a useful shelf; very elegant is the workmanship under the doors, which serves as a base for the bedside table; the doors themselves have been cleverly hinged on the side of the bedside table. The handles, in burnished brass, are not from the period but were replaced at a later date. The bedside tables were created between 1930 and 1935 in a craft workshop in Cantù, a town in the province of Como in Lombardy (Italy), renowned for its tradition in the production of luxury furniture and long regarded as an important centre for furniture craftsmanship with a reputation established over the years for the creation of high-quality pieces. The Cantù companies have always supplied furniture for a high-end clientele, which included both private individuals and luxury furnishing projects for hotels, restaurants and prestigious residences all over the world. The bedside tables were made from normal walnut wood, then an unusually strong and robust veneer was made from a superior quality of walnut, the best part of the 'Juglans regia' wood called 'national walnut' or 'European walnut' was used. Walnut (Juglans regia) is a valuable and expensive hardwood; its colours, flaming and grain have been appreciated for centuries. It is a wood with an incomparable aesthetic appearance. Walnut furniture is highly sought after but also expensive because the proportion of usable wood in each plant is very small. Veneering is an ancient woodworking technique that involves the application of a thinner layer of precious wood on a substrate of normal quality walnut wood; the precious walnut wood is harvested from trees cultivated specifically for this purpose, then it is cut into thin sheets whose thickness varies from 1 to 2 millimetres, in the case of our nightstands this thickness is greater; the base wood is prepared by applying a special glue, then the fine walnut sheets are applied manually and evenly; after this process, the whole is pressed and left to dry, allowing the glue to adhere firmly between the fine walnut wood and the substrate, creating a stable veneer; this, once dry, is finished by sanding, polishing and the application of protective finishes, such as varnish or oil, to improve the appearance and durability of the wood. The history of veneering dates back many centuries; it is believed that it was first used in ancient Egypt and China. Over the centuries, this technique has spread throughout the world and has continued to evolve, becoming an important part of the production of high-quality furniture, luxury goods and Objet d'art. This ancient technique, applied to our bedside tables, has made it possible to enhance the colours, flaming and grain of the precious flamed walnut. Our craftsmen have completely restored the wooden structure by hand and the items are in excellent condition. Width 57 cm, depth 37 cm, height 68 cm. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) to ensure maximum protection and safety of the objects.
