Item description

Lithography by Renzo De Benedetti (Novara, 1904 – Novara, 1958) depicting bulls and a farmer, 1929. De Benedetti was an Italian painter and decorator. He regularly exhibited at the Permanente in Milan and was present at the XXIV Venice Biennale with a still life. He frescoed the church of Prarolo Vercellese. After the Second World War he abandoned detailed descriptions of the language, gradually simplifying the shadows until he reached an informal language obtained through the combination of vibrant colors. His works can be found in the Civic Art Gallery of Novara. As the sun sets, a farmer seen from behind proceeds with two bulls towards the back of the scene. The land is flat and desolate, the sky glassy, there is a sense of strangeness. The light comes from the left, defining a marked chiaroscuro that gives depth and truth to the composition. The social theme and the technique refer to the examples of the Lombard-Piedmontese school of the end of the 19th century although the forms are already simplified, massive, classic, coherent with the dictates of the Novecento group recently founded in Milan. Bottom left in pencil beyond the inscription "lithography", on the right "R. DE. BENEDETTI/1929". Fresh impression on light paper, wide margins beyond the edge. In excellent condition, except for some folds on the white edges only. Bibliography: Comanducci, Dizionario illustrato dei Pittori, Disegnatori e Incisori Italiani Moderni e Contemporanei, 1962.
