Item description

Large oil painting on canvas depicting a marina with sailing ships at sea. The sea of a colour tending to green, typical of the aftermath of a storm, is still strongly rippled but the boats take to the sea under a leaden sky. A work of excellent painterly hand, it is signed at lower left by F. C. Wagner romantic artist (1839 - 1923). Beautiful contemporary gilded wooden frame. The painting is in first cloth and without any restoration. Datable to the mid-19th century. The dimensions are: 130 x 96 cm including the frame, 102 x 66 cm the canvas alone. Karl Ludwig Friedrich Wagner, also known as Carl Wagner (born 8 May 1839 in Karlsruhe, † 15 August 1923 in Düsseldorf), was a German painter. Wagner's parents were Cornelius and Juliette Wagner. From 1854 to 1864 he was a pupil of Ludwig Des Coudres at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. His daughter Juliette was born in Dresden in 1868 and his son Cornelius was born there in 1870. Both also became painters. Karl Wagner and his family settled in Düsseldorf, where he became a member of the Malkasten artists' association. Market Day in a Port Town, 1893 Initially he painted historical genre scenes in the strict style of the Des Coudres school, then after 1870 he moved on to scenes of the Franco-Prussian War, including Otto von Bismarck's meeting with Napoleon III, Bismarck's negotiations with Adolphe Thiers and Jules Favre, etc. Also ‘Emperor Wilhelm and his Paladins’, distributed by engraved reproduction. His original paintings ended up mostly in the United States. He also became known for his harbour and fishing motifs, and also produced numerous portraits, such as those of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, Emperors Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II, Otto von Bismarck and others, with a ‘noble and representative conception’ and the most carefully pictorial training'. Wagner's works are exhibited at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Barmer Fame Hall in Wuppertal, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and the Stolberg Town Hall, among others. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of the Three Allies in Düsseldorf. A regular certificate of authenticity with photo is issued. We guarantee a response to your mail within 24 hours.
