Item description

A true rarity from 1954, by Jindrich Halabala. Collector's condition! Excellent vintage condition! Even the original shellac polish shines through. Original glass, lock and key. The cabinet can be found in the UP Závody furniture catalogue. Beautiful Czech master design. Wood veneered in walnut, birch, mahogany and ebony. Art deco style but mid-century lines. Barely visible signs of use. Perfect for books, heirlooms or thanks to the height adjustable shelves, can also be used as a bar cabinet. H 161 cm x W 120 cm x D 47 cm. Jindrich Halabala helped create a new mass market approach to design and home furnishing in Czechoslovakia in the interwar and post-World War II period. He believed that furniture could and should be well finished, fully functional, modular, mobile and largely affordable. As chief designer of the large furniture manufacturer United Arts and Crafts Manufacture (UP) based in Brno, he significantly influenced its production programme from the 1930s onwards, paving the way for industrial furniture production in Czechoslovakia. He developed two basic series of modular furniture: the H, J and E lines, and many types of wooden seating. He also designed innovative tubular steel furniture, produced in UP's Hodonín branch.
