Pair of LCW armchairs by Charles & Ray Eames for H. Miller, 1990s

Pair of original Charles & Ray Eames armchairs. In bentwood, excellent condition. These two LCW chairs by Charles and Ray Eames, produced by Herman Miller in the 1990s in a matte black by ABT Modern, are simply magnificent. A limited edition, customised, a kind of design ballet. The LCW, short for Lounge Height (L) Side Chair (C) on Wood (W) Base, began as a dance of plywood forms during the war years. Charles Eames, the choreographer of this work, created a chair that has become a classic over the years. The LCW stage is made of five layers of plywood, skilfully shaped and assembled with the precision of a theatre performance. In 1946, four adult plywood chairs were presented to the public, including the LCW, together with its dining height twin (DCW). A veritable ensemble called ‘Eames Chairs’. The LCW is a symphony of shapes and materials that fascinated the public in the post-war period. Herman Miller became the main director in ‘47 and kept this production alive, even though the LCW took a short break in “57, only to return to the stage in ”94, as a great comeback in design history. A story told through Girard's veneer, colours and updates, a true pièce de résistance.
