Item description

Lithography by Eugene Carriere (Gournay-sur-Marne, 1849 – Paris, 1906) depicting Nelly Carriere, 1895. Carriere was a refined French painter and engraver of Alsatian origin. Despite the opposition of his father, who would have wanted him to be a craftsman to guarantee himself the bread that he had not been able to provide for his numerous children, he dedicated himself to art not without working. A student of Cabanel in Paris, he worked as an apprentice at a printing house, then at the famous poster designer J. Cheret, learning all the printing techniques. Considered the artist of family intimacy, in addition to painting he creates lithographs, etchings and some drypoints. His style is influenced by the study of Rembrandt and by a certain symbolism expressed in almost monochrome compositions in which light is the protagonist. The work depicts the profile portrait of Nelly Carriere, the author's daughter. The subject is also known by the title: Les yeux clos or Profil de jeune fille. Using the white of the paper, the author draws the female profile as if it were emerging from the darkness as if in a dream. The black background is further worked with a tip to create the detail of the hair and highlight her profile. It is one of the most technically sophisticated examples of lithography of the period. Carriere worked with master printmaker Edouard Duchâtel using a combination of tray paper, pencils, inks, burnishers and polishing effects to achieve an evanescent yet intense form. The work comes from the rare album IX of the original L'Estampe publication. In the nine albums published between 1893 and 1895 in Paris by André Marty (1886 – 1956), the most innovative artists of the time (e.g. Lautrec, Gauguin, Whistler, Pisarro, Redon) worked with the most refined and experimental techniques known. Made in 100 copies, the aim was to demonstrate, for a total of 97 sheets, the technical and expressive potential of the original engraving. Bottom left in the engraving: Eugene Carriere. Beyond the engraving in the lower margin in pencil: signature and number 29; embossed stamp of L'Estampe Originale (L.819). An example was exhibited in September 1895 at the Centenaire de la Lithographie exhibition and in 1907 in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Artes at the Exposition de l'OEuvre de Eugène Carrière exhibition. Delteil states that the stone was destroyed and that about fifteen working tests were carried out. Single examples are in museums in Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Vienna, Budapest; a rare complete album is preserved at the Metropolitan Museum. Excellent impression with intense blacks printed with a white background. Excellent state of conservation, homogeneous browning of the support. Bibliography: Delteil 18; Stein and Karshan, L'Estampe origine: A Catalog Raisonne (New York: The Museum of Graphic Art, 1970) 13.
