Item description

Painter, ceramist and sculptor, Guerrino Tramonti was born in Faenza on 30 June 1915. He exhibited at a very young age as a sculptor at regional and national exhibitions: in 1931, at the age of just sixteen, he was awarded the ‘Rimini’ prize; in 1932 and 1934 he won first prize at the ‘Rubicone’ competition in the city of Rimini. In 1938, in his early twenties, he was awarded a prize at the 1st National Ceramics Competition organised by the city of Faenza. In the 1960s, his artistic research reached new developments, moving from majolica decorated with thick underglaze glazes to new high-temperature materials such as stoneware and porcelain. The decade from 1960 to 1970 saw Tramonti's ceramics veer towards the ceramic ‘absolute’ with forms that became sculptures, polychrome and shaded glazes and the effects of crystallisation. In 1964, Japan planned a travelling exhibition to celebrate the opening of the Olympic Games in Tokyo and paid him homage by choosing his works from among the world's artists who best represented the Japanese spirit.
