Item description
Aquatint and carborundum "Warrior and his death" by José García Ortega (Arroba de los Montes, 1921 – Paris, 1990), 1971. Ortega was a Spanish painter and printmaker. He moved to Madrid at the age of 13, became interested in art and at the outbreak of the civil war he soon became a protester artist. He joined the communist party, convicted and pardoned in 1952 and enrolled at the National School of Graphic Arts and the Free Club of Fine Arts in Madrid. Thanks to a scholarship he went to Paris, a city that will host him in exile until 1970 and rewarded him with a gold medal for his civil struggle. In 1958, he founded the group "Estampe Populaire". In the following years he regularly exhibited engravings, drawings and paintings in France and abroad. He mostly deals with topics related to his civil commitment, often organized in cycles; only in the 1980s would his compositions become tinged with mystery. In 1972, the artist presented the cycle of 60 etchings "Ortega + Dürer" at the Nuremberg Museum. The cycle was created in 1971 and is divided into four themes (Youth, Conquest, Mysticism and Love) each composed of fifteen subjects (twelve engravings and three woodcuts). Ortega reflects and updates the themes already covered by the German master, both address the political reality in which great ideals mix with violent and destructive tendencies. All tables are delimited by a white line. Table no. 10 of the series dedicated to the Conquest. Signature bottom right and numbering bottom left. Exemplary 29/50. Impression on thick paper with "France/Arches" watermark. Uncut sheet. In excellent condition except for traces of old editing on the back.
