Item description

Etching by Bernardino Rosaspina (Venice 1797 – Bologna 1882) depicting the Cathedral and the Square of Ferrara. Bernardino was born into a famous family of artists: his father Giuseppe (Bologna 1765 – 1832) and his uncle Francesco (Montescudo, Rimini 1762 – Bologna 1841) were engravers, founder of the chair of engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. His style was influenced by the scenographic-quadraturist tradition, by the language of Felice Giani (San Sebastiano Curone 1758 – Rome 1823) and above all by eighteenth-century landscape painting. He specialized in engravings of views, creating two series: one of 33 plates dedicated to Romagna "Vedute di Romagna" (1831-1836) and the other to Tuscany "Viaggio storico pittorico ossia guida della Toscana" (1832). Scenes of common life are represented as still images in the sheet: some people watch a puppet show on the right, others in the foreground are talking or heading towards the entrance of the Cathedral, while on the left a procession with two men holding the cross. The Cathedral of San Giorgio, majestic and complex, is placed diagonally so as to show not only the façade with loggias, rose windows, bas-reliefs and the porch supported by lions and telamons but also the merchants' loggia and the Renaissance bell tower. The title is engraved at the bottom center and on the left: Ber. Rosaspina dis: e inc:. Excellent print. Excellent state of conservation, except for minimal restorations on the back. Wide margins. Bibliography: Luigi Servolini, Dizionario Illustrato degli incisori italiani moderni e contemporanei, Milan, Gorlich, pp. 706-707.
