Item description
Etching by Bernardino Rosaspina (Venice 1797 – Bologna 1882) depicting the Cathedral of Ravenna. Bernardino was born into a famous family of artists: his father Giuseppe (Bologna 1765 – 1832) and his uncle Francesco (Montescudo, Rimini 1762 – Bologna 1841) were engravers, founder of the chair of engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. His style was influenced by the scenographic-quadraturist tradition, by the language of Felice Giani (San Sebastiano Curone 1758 – Rome 1823) and above all by eighteenth-century landscape painting. He specialized in engravings of views, creating two series: one of 33 plates dedicated to Romagna "Vedute di Romagna" (1831-1836) and the other to Tuscany "Viaggio storico pittorico ossia guida della Toscana" (1832). In the sheet, from a drawing by L. Ricciardelli, we see a glimpse of common life represented: some gentlemen of the time are heading towards the entrance of the Cathedral of Ravenna. Ravenna's main place of worship, the Baroque-style cathedral characterized by large porticoes, a semicircular tympanum and a majestically rising cylindrical bell tower illuminated by the first rays of the sun. Engraved at the bottom left: L. Ricciardelli dis, in the center the title and on the right: B. Rosaspina inc. BR embossed stamp. Excellent print. Excellent state of conservation, except for minimal restorations on the reverse. Wide margins.
