Item description
Burin engraving by Virgil Solis (Nuremberg 1514 – Nuremberg 1562) depicting Hector vo Droi. Solis was a German painter, typographer and engraver, also very prolific in the illustration sector; the woodwinds for Ovid's Metamorphoses are very well known. Mixing the Italian and German styles with balance, in addition to the plates he engraved himself, he created a quantity of decorative models then engraved by his workshop which found use in all fields of craftsmanship such as goldsmithing, furniture, weapons and architecture. The print belongs to the Nove Valorosi series. According to O'Dell-Franke it would be inspired by the same series engraved in 1516 by Hans Burgkmair the Elder (Hollstein 247-252). Within an architectural frame of Renaissance style animated by cherubs, vines, vultures, profiles of satyrs and amphorae we see Hector, son of Priam, prince of Troy. Commander of the Trojan armies is depicted full-length with his head turned to the left. He wears a plumed helmet and elaborate armor. With his right hand he holds a shield, inside which the letters G and S indicating the colors are engraved. Behind him the profile of a city, probably Troy. Bottom right of the artist's monogram tablet: VS. In the bottom center frame: HECTOR.VO.DROI. The quality of the print is comparable to the specimen preserved in the British Museum in London. Excellent print trimmed at the always visible edge. In excellent condition except for a small thinning on the back. Bibliography: Hollstein 292; O'Dell-Franke c.4; Bartsch IX.253.57.
