Item description
Large needlepoint rug with continuous pattern, 1980s. Very large size 6.70 m x 4.30 m. With various shades of blue, beige and a touch of deep brown. The continuous pattern allows it to fit easily into any context. Needlepoint is a type of canvas work, a form of embroidery in which the thread is sewn through a rigid canvas with a needle. Needlepoint designs completely cover the canvas. It is done with only a simple curtain (slanting) stitch and the designs are based on colour changes in the thread. Needlepoint is the oldest form of canvas work. The degree of detail in needlepoint depends on the thread count of the underlying canvas. Due to needlepoint's inherent lack of flexibility, common uses include spectacle cases, Christmas ornaments, cushions, bags, upholstery and tapestries. Handmade in China in the 1980s. Small flaws as seen in the last photos.
