Armchair 637 Utrecht XL by Gerrit Rietveld for Cassina

637 Utrecht XL armchair by Gerrit T. Rietveld for Cassina. Supporting structure in steel, padding in polyurethane foam and polyester wadding, fabric covering with stitched or zig zag stitching; a contrasting stitching underlines the geometry of the armrest. Utrecht XL is a new interpretation of the iconic 1935 model: an anthropometric response to the growth spurts of generations. The Utrecht armchair stands out for its constructivist design, with volumes that are incorporated to form an original and futuristic seat. A soft and airy architecture, with a comfortable, soft and always supported seat. A characterizing sign are the armrests, which, due to their geometric and angular line, contrast with the soft lines of the seat itself. Gerrit Rietveld designed the Utrecht armchair in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam, orienting the design with a view to wider distribution. This example is well preserved, dates back to the 2000s, and has some signs of use as shown in the photos.
